ROOTS AND WINGS

Roots and Wings is a multidisciplinary arts in health and education team dedicated to working with young people, their families and their communities to create new traditions and cultural change. Using a range of methods refined over the last 13 years the Roots and Wings team use the arts with participants to improve their reflective practice, social and emotional development and wellbeing.

Here at Knowleswood a core team of four artists led by Mary Robson work with pupils on long term projects. Currently the team are working with years 2 and 4 on a yearlong project towards our third annual sharing event in July. For our Land Ahoy! day the doors of the school will be open to visitors from far and wide to see the exhibits created by the two year groups.

PROJECTS WITH YEAR 4

On Tuesdays last year, the Cartography department was  found in the hall working away feverishly on their latest piece inspired by the seven continents of the world. The cartographers mapped a range of things from far off exotic lands, to the Holmewood area and even inside their own heads! Artists Mary and James guided the Year 4 Laurel and Juniper classes, as they explored the complexities of map making, discovered all about their interests from around the world and worked together to produce exhibits for the end of year celebrations.

PROJECTS WITH YEAR 2

Last year, members of Year 2 Mulberry and Oak classes joined the pirate crew training academy in the art hall. Throughout this year the  proved that they are courageous, they learnt the pirate code and avoided scurvy in order to showcase their knowledge and become fully fledged members of Captain Incy and Christina's crew. They needed to research all the different aspects of pirating, know the difference between a beccaneer and a privateer, be able to follow Captain orders, resd treasure maps, tie knows, fly their own flags and even build ships!

They looked at what personal qualities they needed to be a valueable crew member, how team work is vital on a ship and how each of us can bring something unique to our adventures!
