Spelling

At Knowleswood, spelling is taught daily, in Years 2 and 3, and 3 times a week, in Years 4 - 6. Children are introduced to spelling rules and patterns within these sessions and are given opportunities to practise building words in a variety of ways.

Our teachers follow the No-Nonsense Spelling Scheme to introduce the focus words, rules and patterns that our children are required to learn. They also use the scheme to introduce the strategies which will support children in using the rules and patterns in other words.

If you would like to support your child at home you can visit our parent’s page to find a list of strategies that can be used with the spelling words that your child is bringing home. You will also find a list of fun activities that can be used to make spelling exciting and memorable.

Our spelling leader is Miss Anderton (Year 1) and she is happy to answer any questions that you may have.

PHONICS

At Knowleswood, phonics is taught daily in Nursery, Reception and Year 1. In Year 2 some children access phonics in a targeted intervention. Children are organised according to the phonics phase that they are working on and where possible work in small groups.  Our teachers follow the Letters and Sounds programme, using support materials from a scheme called Jolly Phonics. Children are assessed on an ongoing basis and the lessons adapted accordingly for their needs.

Children in Year 1 undergo the statutory phonics screening check each year in June. Parents are informed about how they can help at home in the months prior to the test. Parents are also informed about the results of the test. Any child who does not pass the phonics screening test in Year 1 retakes it in Year 2 and has additional booster support to help them to do so.

Our phonics leader is Miss Anderton (Year 1) and she is happy to answer any questions that you may have.

On our parents' page, there are ideas for ways that you can help at home.

Outdoor Phonics

Year 1 have an outdoor phonics session for an hour every week, using our outdoor area. In January, parents were invited for a session and they stayed for a meeting about the Year 1 phonics screening check.
